Lighting Trends

Lighting plays an important role in every corner of  one’s house. Indirect or mood lighting are options customers enjoy today for the evenings whereas direct lighting or bright lighting has become the order of the day. Lighting in the living room is gearing towards creating a relaxed and comfortable mood. One should aim for layers of light, and position light sources in a way so they form roughly a triangle to ensure good distribution of illumination. Table lamps that focus the light down will encourage people to sit down and relax.

The overlapping arcs of light illuminate the seating instead of the upper walls, sending the message to sit. Indirect or mood lighting is also very well appreciated and makes the room look warmer. Having many windows in the house allows bright light in during the day and be it one’s bedroom, living room, bathroom or kitchen, having expansive windows has become a necessity for designer interiors today. Infact interior doors with decorative glass panels also helps in natural light to come in further adding to one’s home décor.

If privacy is a concern, doors with obscure glass blocks are available so one can enjoy privacy while letting in natural light. For bathrooms and kitchens lighting has to be great. One opts for direct or indirect lighting basis the mood of a person. For a warmer look, indirect lighting works wonders. Here are some trends that have made lighting interesting for all of us –
  • White is the little black dress of interior design. It is the most versatile shade on the color wheel – equally perfect for an urban loft, a cozy cottage, a kid-filled suburban home or a mountain retreat. White looks great with every wall color and can break up heavy dark wood tones, brightening a space with its color, as well as being a light source. White Lamps for a table or hung from the wall create a designer look as it also compliments the straight line method of contemporary furniture trends one adopts these days.
  • The latest trend is lighting as a sculpture for the home, truly making it a focal point, similar to art. Design inspirations for these types of fixtures come from sculptures and other artwork. Not everyone can afford a piece of artwork for their home, and most don’t know where to start. An elaborate light fixture can be the focal point, whether it’s hung over the dining room table, kitchen buffet, or in the foyer. Lighting fixtures can be as varied as art itself, helping homeowners express their personal style and design choices.
  •  Fixtures made of solid glass appeal to homeowners with a modern eye for design. Soft, neutral colors accent the room without overwhelming it. All glass chandeliers are an alternative to traditional light fixtures, though the shape is traditional, the use of all glass makes it edgy. Blue is today’s new neutral lending a quiet sophistication to any room.
  • Every room is a blank canvas, just waiting for the right lighting fixture. Gone are the days of a single chandelier over your grandmother’s dining room table. Interest in home décor and design has led to the use of lighting fixtures in unexpected places. Try hanging two pendants together over a breakfast buffet and mini table lamps over bedside tables.
